We first came to the Harmony area in 1998 on an Antique buying trip.(We are OLD CROW ANTIQUES of Harmony). Found an Amish house with a Furniture and Candy sign out front. We bought some turtles & cashew crunch and wound up trading antique kerosene lamps for more candy. They directed us to a near by farmer who was selling antiques- there we found a GREAT stepback cupboard.
.
One thing lead to another & we started stopping back on a regular basis to visit, bringing them paint thinner from the Fleet Farm Store. Finally we had to ask what the heck they were doing with all that thinner. Come to find out, many Amish families prefer mineral spirits to kerosene, to burn in their lamps. It burns, cleaner,& brighter, with little smell or soot.
.
We became friends with that family & over time their extended family, mom, dad, brothers sisters etc. They found our interest in antiques funny & wondered why we would want all that "OLD JUNK". The things the Amish use on a daily basis, are the bread & butter for our country antique business. We became close with many Amish families in the area. Finding for them : Kerosene Lamps, Vintage washing machines,Old metal wheeled reel lawn mowers etc.
In 2004 we bought a building on the Root River Bicycle trail & in 2005 we moved our business from Stillwater Mn to Canton Mn- the hub of Minnesota's Amish Country. At that time we knew one funny Norwegian-who sold us his building & about 5 Amish families. The Amish in the area often stopped to borrow our telephone & occasionally sell us some junk- I mean antiques
.
In 07' we bought an old house in Harmony, on hwy 52 across from the feed mill, and opened OLD CROW ANTIQUES.
We know the Amish very well & feel we can give a personal tour that we can cater to what you are interested in....Furniture,Basketry Crafts,Home made baked goods, quilts, greenhouses,& farms.
